Folk Art

What is folk art? Folk art is a traditional craft made to express traditional beliefs, way of life or cultural myth and legend. It is not mass produced and is made by individuals and not in factory settings. It can be solely decorative; such as a carving or sculpture or utilitarian; such as an elaborately painted bowl or a hand knotted rug.

A sub variant; Nova Scotia folk art is typically quite rustic and usually whimsical and vibrant in colour. Most often, Nova Scotian folk art is made by self taught creatives and laypersons, out of materials ready at hand or even repurposed. Waste products such as salvaged paint, lumber remnants, recycled wood, metal, stone and other materials are often used. The Joie de Vivre feeling of Nova Scotian life is infused into the artwork and make it much loved by collectors, who enjoy being reminded of the Maritime province's happy, peaceful atmosphere.
